MAXIMA & MINIMA PROBLEMS

MAXIMA & MINIMA PROBLEMS

1.   A quantity Q can be expressed in terms of two variables, for example x and y. (e.g. area A=xy)

2.  x and y will be related by an equation using information given in the question (e.g. the perimeter is 20m so 2x+2y=20)

3. Use the relationship between x and y from (2) to express Q in terms of only ONE variable. (e.g. A=x(10-x))

4. Use calculus to determine for what value of x, the quantity Q is a max or a min depending on the question. Make sure you check its a max or min using one of the tests.

5. Don't forget to actually answer the question!
